The Sierra Didn't Get the Memo

Tuesday morning and the National Weather Service just issued Winter Storm Warnings for the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades — in late April — with the kind of language they usually reserve for January. Yosemite backcountry and the high passes are looking at a legitimate dump through Wednesday evening, and Mammoth is sitting there with 9 more centimeters in the three-day forecast like the season never got the cancellation notice. Meanwhile, the Northern Rockies just became the most interesting place on the map: Jackson Hole has 30 centimeters — a full foot — in the three-day forecast, which is the kind of late-season gift that separates the people who put their skis away too early from the people who didn't. Out East, six New England areas are still hanging on, with Killington and Jay Peak leading the charge into May with the quiet confidence of people who've done this before. The season keeps narrowing, but the skiing keeps getting more interesting for the ones still paying attention.
